Never Search Alone: Re-energizing Your Job Search Strategy with Phyl Terry

On January 20, 2026, Phyl Terry, author of Never Search Alone: The Job Seeker’s Playbook, spoke with the Pivot with Purpose community to re-energize our job search strategies, featuring proven approaches from their book and program that have helped more than 50,000 job seekers land new roles in challenging job markets. Laura Sheehan moderated this event.

A year ago, the international development landscape and public sector underwent profound, unprecedented shifts, resulting in the loss of employment for thousands. Since then, many of you have pivoted in community—sharpening job search skills, exploring new careers, and sharing resources—with some former colleagues transitioning to new positions last fall.

In this spirit of community, Phyl Terry spoke with event attendees at length about best job search strategies, the importance of networking, and how to prevent (or at least limit) burnout through what is, inherently, a difficult process! He also provided practical approaches to navigating your pivot strategy with greater confidence, effectiveness, and support in today’s tumultuous job market.

In addition to his job-searching tips, Terry also discussed his book and programming, offering insights into how his Never Search Alone (NSA) method and Job Search Council (JSC) programs can assist with your career pivots.

Terry argues that this global, no cost, volunteer-led job search method is far more effective than writing numerous, albeit anonymous or rushed, job applications. Narrowing your ask and skillset; meeting with new people one-on-one, and harnessing the power of a global network of both loose and strong ties is helpful for all job-seekers. This method also allows us to implement other strategies discussed throughout the Pivot with Purpose program!
